TERMS OF USE: Contributing and using ISIMIP simulation data

Note: We are in the process of migrating our publicly available data from our ESGF portal to the new ISIMIP repository. When we mention the ISIMIP repository in these terms of use, we imply this and our ESGF portal as well. Please note that the "ISIMIP repository" is different to the "ISIMIP repository at DKRZ".

ISIMIP Workflow of contributions

If you want to contribute with your own simulation data to ISIMIP, read here about our data management workflow: data upload, quality checks, embargo period, data publication, licenses, DOIs and data replacement.

Please first see how to Join ISIMIP.

Terms of use - During embargo period

Data uploaded to the ISIMIP repository at DKRZ that has passed our quality checks, undergoes an embargo period.

By submitting data to or downloading data from the ISIMIP repository at DKRZ during its embargo period, you agree to the following terms of use.

Terms of use - Publicly available data

After the embargo period, simulation data can be made publicly available at the ISIMIP repository.

By downloading data from the ISIMIP repository, or from the ISIMIP repository at DKRZ after the embargo period, you agree to the following terms of use

Notes on DOIs

  • The DOI refers to a specific instance of the data ensemble at the time it is made publicly available, i.e. the time of transfer to the ISIMIP repository. See currently available DOIs for ISIMIP data sets.
  • In the case of data replacements after this time, a new DOI must be issued (see Notes on replacing data).
  • The DOI citation lists all relevant model-contact people, as well as contributing scientists. The model contact people will be based on this list. It is the responsibility of the contact people to ensure that the list of contributing scientists is complete.
  • The order of citation of contributors to a DOI is the following (each subgroup is listed alphabetically):
  1. ISIMIP sector coordinators (if more than one person, order should be agreed among them),
  2. Modelers,
  3. ISIMIP data managers,
  4. ISIMIP cross-sectoral science team for this sector.

Notes on replacing data

  • When replacing already quality-checked data, either in the ISIMIP repository at DKRZ or on the ISIMIP repository, an email must be sent to info@isimip.org, as well as the appropriate sector coordinator.
  • Replacement of already quality-checked data, either in the ISIMIP repository at DKRZ or on the ISIMIP repository, are documented in the output data change log. These changes are also sent by email in a digest to all contact people of participating models and all those with access to the internal ISIMIP repository at DKRZ.
  • Replacement of data published on the ISIMIP repository requires a new DOI to be issued. Please report any issues to info@isimip.org and to the coordination team to ensure a new DOI is issued. Changes will also be reported via the output data change log and information will be sent by email in a digest to all contact people of participating models, all those with access to the internal ISIMIP repository at DKRZ and all people registered in the "isimip-caveats" mailing list.
  • It is the responsibility of paper lead authors to ensure that they have used the most up-to-date data version before submitting a paper. Modellers included as co-authors should actively communicate any updates of their data to the lead-author.
