Research Scientist for Global Hydrological Modelling

(Ph.D. student, 100 % E13 TV-G-U, 3 years)

Send your application until 31.05.2021

Within the DFG research unit „GlobalCDA“, the Chair of Hydrology at Goethe University Frankfurt invites applications for the three-year position of Research Scientist for Global Hydrological Modelling (Ph.D. student, 100% E13 TV-G-U). The position will be filled as early as possible. The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).

Description

The Working Group Hydrology is a worldwide leading research group in the field of global hydrological modelling. Applying and further developing the global water resources and use model WaterGAP, a major aim is to achieve an improved assessment of water scarcity and water-related risks due to climate variability and human impacts, in particular water use and climate change.

The Ph.D. student will be part of the interdisciplinary DFG research unit GlobalCDA (Understanding the global freshwater system by combining geodetic and remote sensing information with modelling using a calibration/data assimilation approach, globalcda.de). S/he will continue the development of a global gradient-based groundwater model and its implementation into WaterGAP. This will be supported by an expert from USA who is involved in the project as Mercator Fellow as well as by the computer scientist who developed the global groundwater model. This research is expected to result in particular in an improved simulation of the interaction between surface water bodies and the groundwater, which is important for assessing renewable groundwater resources and the well-being of freshwater biota. Furthermore, the Ph.D. student will improve the modelling of man-made reservoirs in WaterGAP.

For your research, you can count on your colleagues and the working group leader. Specific activities in the research unit support interdisciplinary knowledge transfer and your professional development. Further training and support is offered by the graduate academy GRADE of Goethe University.

Requirements

A prerequisite for hiring is a Master degree in computer science, geodesy, hydrology, hydrogeology, meteorology, physical geography, environmental science, civil engineering or a similar discipline (minimum grade of 2.0). Very good knowledge of programming, modelling and data analysis and very good analytic skills are essential. Hydrological knowledge is a plus. Persons who are enthusiastic about research, show initiative and enjoy working in a team would fit well into our working group.

Application

The Goethe University is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women to apply. Candidates with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration in case of equal qualification.

The university is committed to equal rights for women and men and therefore strongly encourages women to apply. Severely disabled persons are given priority in the case of equal qualifications.
