The fixed lightning climatology provides a monthly global climatology of lightning flash rates on a 0.5° × 0.5° grid. This dataset is intended for impact models requiring lightning as an external forcing while excluding the influence of projected climate-driven changes in lightning occurrence.
- Monthly climatological lightning flash rates
- Global coverage at 0.5° × 0.5° spatial resolution
- Identical annual cycle repeated for all simulation years (fixed climatology)
- Used as prescribed lightning forcing without temporal trend or scenario dependence
We do not provide "no climate change" lightning data. Instead the original Flash Rate Monthly Climatology from Cecil (2006) should be used in the counterclim set-up.
The fixed lightning climatology is derived from the LIS/OTD 0.5° High Resolution Monthly Climatology (HRMC), which combines observations from the Optical Transient Detector (OTD) and the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) to provide a global monthly climatology of lightning flash rates. The climatology is distributed through NASA's Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) DAAC.
