Future AUSD data based on Hanasaki et al. (2016)
Area Using Seawater Desalination (AUSWD) projections for multiple SSPs, years, and options. AUSWD is a concept proposed in Hanasaki et al. (2016) which is the area relying its industrial and domestic water abstraction on desalinated seawater. AUSWD is determined by three factors, namely, the distance from coastline, GDP per capita (SSP database, consistent with the data used in Hanasaki et al., 2016), and the aridity (the ratio of precipitation divided by potential evaporation).Using the input data of ISIMIP3, we presented binary AUSWD data (1 for utilizing, 0 for not) from 2015 to 2100 at 0.5 degrees with or without change of aridity, respectively.
2015fixed: -> woAridity: the factor of aridity was fixed at the historical level (year 2015).
transient: -> wAridity: the factor of aridity varies with the projected year of climate condition (from 2015 to 2100).
Regarding the option of without change of aridity (under woAridity), the aridity was fixed in 2015 based on the historical climate data from GSWP3-W5E5, 20CRv3, 20CRv3-ERA5, and 20CRv3-W5E5, respectively, otherwise the aridity (under wAridity) was changed year-by-year based on 5 climate forcing (GFDL-ESM4, IPSL-CM6A-LR, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, MRI-ESM2-0, UKESM1-0-LL) and 3 SSPs-RCPs (SSP1-RCP2.6, SSP3-RCP7.0, SSP5-RCP8.5).
