Derived according to the methodology described in Yao et al. (2025, https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-6121279/v1). A default update rate is set based on long-term irrigation techniques share data from two representative countries with good data coverage (USA and Iran). This rate is then adjusted individually in each grid cell based on the socio-economic (GDP per capita, governance, urbanization and gender inequality index) from SSP dataset and long-term (20-years) precipitation from ISIMIP3a. Update rates are re-calculated every five years, and interpolated linearly to annual values. The suitable irrigation techniques are different among crop types (see Jägermeyr et al., 2015).
