Input data set: Wood Harvesting — National (ISIMIP4)

Protocol relation: Protocol
Data Type: Direct human forcings
Simulation rounds: ISIMIP4b, ISIMIP4a
Description:

Annual wood-harvest area and harvested biomass carbon for five LUH3 land-use classes (primary forest, primary non-forest, secondary mature forest, secondary young forest and secondary non-forest) aggregated to one total per country per year.

Area is given in m², converted from the underlying grid-cell fraction using LUH3's own cell-area field. Biomass carbon is given in kg and split by end use into industrial roundwood and fuelwood, using roundwood/fuelwood fractions from LUH3, new in ISIMIP4. For each class, the roundwood and fuelwood variables sum exactly to that class's total harvested biomass carbon.

Aggregation uses the ISIMIP fractional country mask, which splits border cells proportionally between countries, applied to the native 0.25° LUH3 field before spatial remapping. Countries are identified by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code.

The same fifteen quantities are also published as gridded fields (see the gridded documentation entry for this dataset.)

Specifications

Time step: annual

Spatial resolution: national (one value per ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country per year), aggregated from the native 0.25° LUH3 grid

Format: NetCDF4 (country is a variable-length string coordinate)

Period (ISIMIP4b): 1850–2021 for histsoc and 1850soc; 2022–2099 for 2021soc, ssp1vlsoc-noadapt and ssp3hsoc-noadapt. Scenarios end in 2099.

Period (ISIMIP4a): 1850–2025 for all scenarios, published as two files split at the 1900/1901 boundary.

Filenames carry "national" in place of a resolution token.

Data source

Derived from the CMIP7 input4MIPs UofMD Land-Use Harmonization (LUH3) dataset, using the multiple-transitions wood-harvest area and biomass-carbon fields together with the multiple-management roundwood/fuelwood split fractions. Project page: https://luh.umd.edu/

Historical: UofMD-landState-3-1-2
SSP1-VL: UofMD-landState-vl-3-1-1
SSP3-H: UofMD-landState-h-3-1-1

All three were taken at input4MIPs publication version v20260408.

Country totals additionally use the ISIMIP fractional country mask for country weights, and the static (invariant) LUH3 product from the historical release for grid-cell area, used to convert the wood-harvest area variables from a fraction to m².

Caveats

Gridded and national values are computed independently, not one from the other. National totals are aggregated from the native 0.25° source field using the ISIMIP fractional country mask, before spatial remapping; gridded files were produced by conservatively remapping that same native field onto the 0.25°/0.5° target grids. A user's own country-mask aggregation of the gridded files will not exactly reproduce these values.

The industrial-roundwood and fuelwood variables sum exactly to that class's total harvested biomass carbon. The unsplit total is not published to avoid inviting a downstream double-count.

Country fractions do not sum exactly to 1 everywhere. A small share of harvested mass (typically around 0.03%, from coastal cells whose country fractions fall short of 1) is not attributed to any country; the aggregation is rejected if this exceeds 0.1%.

2021soc differs between the two rounds. Under ISIMIP4b it holds the 2021 land-use state fixed across the 2022–2099 future window; under ISIMIP4a it holds the same state fixed across the full 1850–2025 historical period, as a present-day baseline.

Under ISIMIP4a, two years are held constant: the LUH3 multiple-transitions product this dataset reads stops at 2023, so 2024 and 2025 repeat that last observed year under histsoc, and 1901soc/2021soc hold their respective base year fixed across the whole 1850–2025 span.
