Input data set: Gross Domestic Product (GDP) — Gridded (ISIMIP4)

Total gross domestic product per grid cell, in US dollars in 2017 price level and 2017 Purchasing Power Parity, with annual timesteps.
Users should not compute gridded GDP per capita by dividing this dataset by “Population — Gridded (ISIMIP4)”, as the gridded GDP is distributed partially by population and partially by land use. Please use “Gross Domestic Product Per Capita (GDPpc) — Gridded (ISIMIP4)” instead.

This dataset was created in Horizon Europe project COMPASS (https://compass-climate.eu/) The data was created at high resolution (30 arc seconds, ~1 km) and then upscaled to the coarser resolutions. In a nutshell, the following process was used to derive the data:
(1) Historical (1850-2023) GDP at national level (see “Gross Domestic Product (GDP) — National (ISIMIP4)”) was compiled or estimated from many sources in COMPASS D3.1 [1] and further disaggregated by subnational GDP, where available, based on many sources collected in COMPASS. Future national GDP extended with SSP v3.2 [2].
(5) Built-up area from Global Human Settlement Layer [3] for 1975-2030 was interpolated and extrapolated to 1850 and 2100 based on gridded population change.
(7) GDP was distributed proportionally to gridded population (60% of value) and gridded built-up area (40% of value).
Gridded population was taken from “Population — Gridded (ISIMIP4)”. Input data, code and documentation (including detailed sources) is available on Zenodo [1] and will be further documented in a forthcoming journal publication.
